Center Receives Nonprofit Status

In June 2007, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service granted 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status to the Green Infrastructure Center. The Center is now certified as a charitable educational and scientific institution. This designation allows the Center to receive grants or donations from individuals, corporations, or foundations.

The Center’s Green Community Connections Project is funded by the Virginia Department of Forestry and the USDA Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry program. In summer 2007, the Center will apply for grants to fund an additional 4-6 field tests across the Commonwealth over the next several years.

Future grant projects include tools for conducting economic asset assessments for green infrastructure, crafting promotional tools for localities and organizations, and outreach to communities to support green infrastructure planning. Assessing methods for the protection of natural water infrastructure and community health is another key focus area for the Center [more info].
